This is the first lesson in the basics of digital painting and drawing. Today I will focus on tools.

This tutorial explains everything, I will post some additional tutorials and highlight the most important tools (most important to me).

Tutorial: Tools.

-The Brush.

The brush tool is the most basic tool an artist needs. Heck, for some artists, its the only tool.
If you have a tablet, Photoshop’s brushes vary opacity, thickness of lines and all sorts of cool stuff.

Here are some tutorials explaining a lot about this marvelous tool:
Tutorial1
Tutorial2

-Burn, Dodge and Sponge.

If used badly, the burn and dodge tools will wreck havoc on any drawing. One should never use them alone to make shadows and highlights, they are tools meant for tweaking and details.
In the burn tool options, shadows darkens the picture and saturates it, while highlights darkens and removes saturation.
In the dodge tool options, highlights lightens and saturates the picture, while shadows lightens and removes saturation.
The sponge adds or removes saturation to or from a picture.

These tools can be found in the same spot in your tool bar. right click to switch between tools.

A nice use of the dodge and burn tool:
Tutorial3

-Fade, Sharpen, Smudge

The sharpen tool is a tool meant for sharpening bits of your picture. Don’t over-use this tool, it looks really ugly if you do so. To sharpen a whole image, use the sharpen filter.

The fade tool is a nice tool to help create depth and to help blend colors or soften parts of a cell-shaded drawing in case you don’t have a tablet.

The smudge tool requires a lot of patience. While it might be an easy solution to just smudge your shades, it often looks really ugly. use this tool in combination with a lot of hues or to soften parts of a cell-shaded drawing.

They too can be found in the same spot.

- The pen tool

This is a very helpful tool for hair, cell-shading and lineart, especially if you don’t have a tablet or if you have a wobbly hand.

Basics: Tutorial4
Lineart: Tutorial5
Hair: Tutorial6
Mac users: Tutorial7

Hello everyone, I’m Tashna, the newest addition in Cozalli’s team, now consisting of…. 2 people I think.
English is not my first language, so I might make some grammar mistakes every now and then, sorry for that in advance.

Well, contrary to my new ‘boss’, I specialize in digital drawing, rather than graphic design. Still, as a first post, I would like to feature some nifty photomanipulation tutorials.
Even though some of the results might be a bit shabby, these tutorials cover a lot of cool techniques which will surely help you discover a range of possibilities to upgrade your photomanipulation skills.

In this tutorial, which has one of the most awesome outcomes I’ve seen in photomanipulation, the autor will show you how to create a remote being shot to bits. This is not a tutorial for the faint of heart though, because it contains 47 steps and it would be best if you had some basic understanding of Photoshop’s tools before taking it on.

This is a tutorial which is a dream for the beginning manipulator. It helps one get to know a series of shortcuts for some of the most used tools in photoshop. Through clear and understandable explanations you get to create a clock out of wooden bits. Even though the result could be better with a lot more tweaking of the separate images, the tutorial will surely help you get started in the world of photomanips.

This tutorial, which shows you how to turn a daytime photo into a nighttime photo might not cover a lot of techniques, but the author has very interesting ways, of which I did not think before, to achieve the end result.

Even though this is more of a walkthrough of the creation of a spider manip, rather than a tutorial, the author uses some techniques not explained in the previous tutorials. That, and the end result looks cool.

This isn’t a very long or interesting tutorial, but the vanishing point tool seems like a very helpful tool to easily get good perspective. Also, I found the idea of making a tutorial about sticking stuff in soap quite humorous.

Well, that’s it for now, tune in next time, where I shall explain some of the basics of digital drawing and painting.

www.dafont.com - Dafont.com lists fonts out in categories, newest uploaded, font authors and top 100. Dafont lays out perfectly different categories and makes it easier to find and use fonts. It even tells you on the homepage how to install them!

Dafont offers downloading in Mac and PC format, it also offers a preview feature, where you can preview a selected font with any text you want to. (Shown in the picture below)

www.1001freefonts.com - This website offers the same type of organisation as dafont, the fonts are organized into catagories and aphabeticaly. It also offers Windows and Mac versions of the font and a custom preview.

No authors are shown when you click the font and there isn’t as much detail as dafont, but it does have a large variety of fonts.

www.acidfonts.com - This website offers similar services as the other websites, you can browse by name, categories and there is also links for top 20 fonts, PC fonts and Mac fonts. However, the bad thing about this site is, you can’t preview the font, it is however one click download; which is quite annoying in Google Chrome, but none the less still convenient.

It’s categories and pages aren’t laid out as clearly as the others but it does offer a good range.

4. www.highfonts.com

www.highfonts.com - Highfonts is a very good website that I’ve come across, as you can see in the image it has 3219 free fonts, and 25084 commercial fonts. Although commercial fonts are over weighing the free, it’s still a lot of free fonts available.

The website organises it’s fonts into free and fonts available for purchase, they are then sub categorised into name and top download. No genres here, and no previews either, much like acidfonts it’s one click to download. It does of course have a search and one thing i like very very much, Random Fonts, a selection of fonts that changes each visit, making it quick and easy to find a really good font… randomly.

5. www.actionfonts.com

www.actionfonts.com - Actionfonts, like high fonts has the nice random. But just like it, fonts are organised in name not genres :(. It does have a big selection to scroll through which is good, and does have a top 100 which will save time.

The fonts are one click download to save time, but a preview would be nice.
